What's up on top?

While the remaining 6 qualifying rounds could end today, I was interested in the round-robin tournaments where positions 1 to 4 in each conference play against. Is the playoff intensity is there, is the season's ranking was respected? Of course, I've watched a few minutes of these games, but honestly, I've been more interested in the 3 of 5 so far.

First, each team in the round-robin has played 2 games so far. Let's look at the current ranking of this tournament by comparing, between parentaise, the positions they had during the regular season.

Eastern Conference

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning (2nd) - Remains 1 game against Philadelphia Flyers

  2. Philadelphia Flyers (4th) - Remains 1 game against Tampa Bay Lightning

  3. Washington Capitals (3rd) - Remains 1 game against Boston Bruins

  4. Boston Bruins (1st) - Remains 1 game against Washington Capitals

Western Conference

  1. Colorado Avalanche (2nd) - Remains 1 game against Vegas Golden Knights

  2. Vegas Golden Knight (3rd) - Remains 1 game against the Colorado Avalanche

  3. St. Louis Blues (1st) - Remains 1 game against Dallas Stars

  4. Dallas Stars (4th) - Remains 1 game against the St. Louis Blues

What about the performance of goalkeepers? Let's look at the SV% of each of them.

  • Pavel Francouz - Col - 1,000 (1 win, 0 loss)

  • Carter Hart - Phi - 0.971 (1 win, 0 loss)

  • Philipp Grubauer - Col - 0.969 (1 win, 0 loss)

  • Brian Elliott - Phi - 0.941 (1 win, 0 loss)

  • Andrei Vasilevskiy - TB - 0.933 (2 wins, 0 losses)

  • Tuuka Rask - Bos - 0.914 (0 win, 1 loss)

  • Anton Khudobin - Dal - 0.900 (0 win, 1 loss)

  • Braden Holtby - Wsh - 0.898 (0 win, 2 losses)

  • Jordan Binnington - StL - 0.895 (0 wins, 2 losses)

  • Robin Lehner - Veg - 0.889 (1 win, 0 loss)

  • Ben Bishop - Dal - 0.875 (0 win, 1 loss)

  • Jaroslav Halak - Bos - 0.862 (0 win, 1 loss)

  • Marc-André Fleury - Veg - 0.765 (1 win, 0 loss)

Except for the Vegas Golden Knights goalkeepers, who have a lowest SV% despite the victories, we can say that the performance of the goalkeepers has had a direct impact on the performance of their team. As for Holtby, Binnington and Fleury, they show an SV% lower than their season stat. It will be interesting to see if they bounce back when the real playoffs starts!

We clearly have answers about some teams performance! Where are the Ovechkin and Backstrom? The Pastrnak and Marchand? The Seguin and Benn? Tarasenko? I hope that the intensity will go up a notch as the real playoffs approaches and that these players will wake up. If not, some teams in the top 4 could have short playoffs!
